Income tax calculator: old or new regime?
Compare both regimes for FY 2025-26 and Tax Year 2026-27, with HRA, 80C, 80D, NPS and home-loan interest.
Saves ₹76,210 a year (₹6,351 a month) compared with the old regime.
- The new regime saves you ₹76,210 this year with no paperwork for deductions.
- An extra ₹50,000 into NPS is deductible over and above 80C in the old regime.
- Employer NPS of up to 14% of basic is deductible even in the new regime. Ask HR whether your salary can be restructured.
- The old regime would only win with about ₹2,45,000 more in deductions.

Track it monthlyHow the income tax calculator works
Enter your salary, HRA and rent, and the deductions you claim. The calculator works out your tax under both regimes, with the standard deduction (₹75,000 in the new regime, ₹50,000 in the old), the section 87A rebate, surcharge and 4% health and education cess, and shows which regime leaves you more.
If the new regime wins, it also tells you how much more you'd need in deductions for the old regime to catch up, so you know whether chasing 80C and 80D is worth it.
Tax Year 2026-27 is the first year under the Income-tax Act, 2025. Budget 2026 kept the slabs, standard deduction and rebate, so the numbers match FY 2025-26; the calculator shows the new section numbers (80C is now section 123) beside the familiar ones.
It covers resident individuals with salary income. Capital gains and other special-rate income, agricultural income and carried-forward losses aren't included.
Common questions
Which is better for me, the old or the new tax regime?
It depends on how much you claim in deductions. The new regime has lower slab rates and a bigger standard deduction but allows few deductions; the old regime allows HRA, 80C, 80D, home-loan interest and more. Enter your numbers and the calculator compares both and shows the break-even amount of deductions.
Is income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free in the new regime?
Yes, for normal income. The section 87A rebate (up to ₹60,000) cancels the tax on taxable income up to ₹12 lakh, and the ₹75,000 standard deduction means a salary of up to ₹12.75 lakh pays no tax. Just above ₹12 lakh, marginal relief keeps the tax from exceeding the income over ₹12 lakh.
What are the new regime tax slabs?
Nil up to ₹4 lakh, 5% from ₹4 to 8 lakh, 10% from ₹8 to 12 lakh, 15% from ₹12 to 16 lakh, 20% from ₹16 to 20 lakh, 25% from ₹20 to 24 lakh and 30% above ₹24 lakh, plus 4% cess. They apply to both FY 2025-26 and Tax Year 2026-27.
Can I claim HRA and 80C in the new regime?
No. HRA, 80C, 80D and interest on a self-occupied home loan are old-regime deductions. Your employer's NPS contribution is allowed in both regimes (up to 14% of basic pay in the new regime, 10% in the old).
