How the emergency fund calculator works

Enter your usual monthly spending, the cash you could reach in a day or two, and what you can add each month. The calculator shows how many months your cash would last and how long until you have six months set aside.

Count only money you can reach quickly: a savings account, a sweep-in deposit or a liquid fund. Leave out investments you'd have to sell at a loss or deposits with a lock-in.

In the Neural Tax app this is your Safety Net: it fills first from your monthly surplus, before goals and long-term investing, and it's tracked with every check-in.

Common questions

How big should an emergency fund be?

Six months of your usual spending is a sound target for most salaried people. Aim higher if your income is irregular, you're the only earner, or you support others.

Where should I keep my emergency fund?

Somewhere safe that you can reach in a day or two: a savings account, a sweep-in fixed deposit or a liquid mutual fund. It's not meant to earn high returns, just to be there.

Should I invest before my emergency fund is full?

Usually it's best to build the Safety Net first, so an emergency doesn't force you to sell investments or borrow. Keep paying insurance premiums and any employer-matched contributions while you build it.
