How the SIP calculator works

Pick a mode. "What my SIP grows to" shows what a monthly SIP becomes over the years at the return you enter, with an optional yearly step-up. "SIP for a goal" works backwards: the monthly SIP a goal needs by a date.

Goals are entered in today's rupees and rise 5% a year with prices, so the SIP is sized for what the goal will really cost when you get there.

Equity funds have historically returned 10–12% a year over long periods, but returns aren't guaranteed and vary year to year. Try a lower rate too, to see a cautious case.

Common questions

What is a step-up SIP?

A SIP that rises by a set percentage each year, usually in line with your salary. Even a 5–10% yearly step-up makes a large difference over 15 years or more, because the extra amounts also compound.

Why does my goal amount go up?

Because prices rise. ₹25 lakh in today's money costs more in 15 years. The calculator inflates your goal at 5% a year so you don't fall short.

What return should I assume?

For a long-term equity fund, 10–12% is the commonly used historical range; for debt funds and a mix of assets, lower. Using a slightly lower rate than you hope for gives you a buffer.
